I’ll have the full results as soon as I get them from the good folks at the Zoo City Zymurgists, but I do know that Big Sky Brewing Company’s Cowboy Coffee Porter won Best of Show at this year’s Garden City BrewFest.
It stood out like a sore thumb in what turned out to be a plethora of flawed beers. One nice thing about not knowing which beers you’re judging at any given time is that you can’t judge the beers based on the brewer’s overall standing in your opinion.
I’m not sure what exactly was wrong with many of the beers we tried, but so many didn’t fit the style guidelines that it made judging very difficult. The other side of this is that perhaps the BJCP guidelines have fallen behind the morphing styles of American craft beers. Whatever the case may be, it’s difficult to be a beer judge these days. But the amazing pleasure at being able to taste and describe all the amazing varieties and styles coming from the creative minds of America’s craft brewers is amazing. And I’m grateful to be able to do it.
