Boost your Wi-Fi signal with a beer can

| Matt Pritchard

So I have no idea if this works or not, but the TheChive.com has a how-to guide on increasing the wireless signal in your home. It involves a beer can, scissors and some adhesive. Looks relatively simple, and it’s certainly cheaper than buying a new router. Check it out.

September 8, 2011 | Matt Pritchard

Two big events are set for Friday night, so whether you’re in the Bozeman area or around Missoula, there’s no excuse not to gather around and drink good beer.

Montana Brewers Festival

The third annual Montana-made beer festival is expected to serve more than 75 different beers, in bottomless 6-ounce tasting portions, from over 20 Montana Brewers Association breweries!
Why?
This is the largest collection of Montana-made beer ever gathered in one place. It’s one-stop access to the unique brewers and beers is why Montana is second in breweries-per-capita, and it make Montana a strong contestant as one of the greatest brewing states.

Delicious food will be served including: pull pork sandwiches, brats, burgers, noodles and pizza– and of course, all the fixings! Join this annual marquee festival of Montana-made beer.
Price: $20 in advance, $25 at the door gets you a 6-ounce tasting glass, bottomless pours and all the music and fun. Or join us early, beat the crowds and chat with the brewers for $35.

Lewis and Clark Brewing’s taproom now open; canning in full swing

September 7, 2011 | Matt Pritchard

Lewis and Clark Brewery Co. customers crowd around the bar for a cold beer while others stand on the glass floor upstairs during the grand opening celebration. Photo by Eliza Wiley/Independent Record

The new (and giant) Lewis and Clark Brewing taproom/brewery has been open for a few weeks now and although I haven’t made it in there yet, it at least looks and sounds impressive.

The Helena Independent Record did a write-up of the grand opening, which was held Aug. 27, and with the taproom coming in at around 6,000 square feet, it’s safe to say the place can hold its fair share of beer drinkers. What used to be a jailhouse, icehouse and, most recently, a paint factory, is now an immense brewery with elements of the building’s past still hanging around.

From the barred windows that look into a sitting area, the paint-splattered stairway that leads to the mezzanine and even the stone walls of the men’s restroom — where employees have had to usher women out who are transfixed on the custom-made urinals — the bits of yesteryear stand out.

The urinals are made out of old Sleeping Giant Brewing kegs. There’s also a game room with a shuffleboard table and other goodies throughout. Guess I have a reason to head over to Helena.

Along with the grand opening, there’s also a nice story on Lewis and Clark’s canning operation, a worthwhile read.

13th annual Maverick Brewfest takes over Caras Park on Friday

September 6, 2011 | Matt Pritchard

A favorite of mine, the Maverick Brewfest, is once again setting up shop at Caras Park. The festival, in its 13th year, takes place Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. There will be more than 40 beers available from Montana and the Northwest, and 10 bucks gets you a tasting mug and three drinks, extras are $1. All the proceeds go to help youth sports in western Montana, so you can know that your drinking is helping out the kids.

The days are getting shorter and the nights a little cooler, so take advantage of the last days of summer while you can … with beer.

Billings breweries take on expansions, will be neighbors

September 2, 2011 | Matt Pritchard

Himmelberger Brewing Co. and Angry Hank’s of Billings are both launching separate expansions that’ll put them nearly within arm’s reach on each other.

Dennis Himmelberger of Himmelberger Brewing will be moving his operation out of a Billings home and into a building with six times the space, which will leave room for a new taproom and a coffee shop. He’s been brewing as a wholesaler for the past 17 years.

Angry Hank’s, which already has a Billings brewery/taproom, will have more than double the space at the new location and will likely keep the old taproom open for the foreseeable future.

Man, it’s tough to quench Montana’s thirst for craft beer.

The full story from the Billings Gazette is after the jump. (more…)
