Hard-to-find craft beer
I know I make a big deal out of hard-to-find Belgian beers, but there are a few American craft brews popping up in this category as of late. Deschute’s The Abyss is one of them, but the king of hard-to-find beers might just be Alaskan Brewing Co.’s Barley Wine Ale.
One of the most decorated craft beers on the planet, this once-a-year release was bottled for the first time in 2008. Now, I’m hearing that you can order bottles through Liquid Solutions in Oregon and Liquor Max in Colorado.
I have friends who’ve successfully ordered beer and wine to be delivered here in Montana, but proceed at your own risk. You might end up with a charge on your credit card and no beer to speak of. The distributor has to be willing to ship it here, and I’ve not found anybody (in the beer arena) who will do that.
If you have a bottle of this beer, call me. If you find a bottle, buy two, and I’ll pay you back.
Prost,
GG

Funny that ordering a beer in Montana can constitute a criminal act.
I just checked the state website and looks like there are no efforts in the works to make beer legal in Montana yet.
Luckily, I have four gallons of 16% barleywine in the house that I can choose to enjoy at any time.
It’s strange that the big breweries in the state have not contested this at all. Just a month ago we could get a decent beer selection in grocery stores in Missoula. Now, everything high octane has been pulled. I wonder where the beer lovers are, and why they haven’t made their concerns known to law makers.
Kinda makes you wonder if a festival like the Holiday Ale Festival (Portland) or the Big Beer festival in Vail could ever happen in Montana…. Want to see where I was last weekend?

Huh, happen to have two in my cellar. They are available at Mar Cellar’s in Idaho Falls. I’d be happy to see if I can snag more this weekend.
Hey Slats,
Thanks for the offer. I ordered two bottles from a company in Oregon that doesn’t seem to have a problem shipping beer to Montana. We’ll see if it shows up.
Thanks,
Tim
