I've been brewing shop bought syrup beer kits for past couple of months, and although my hubby assures me they taste good, I want to move on and concoct my own brews now. Having discovered that way back in the Medieval times, women were brewsters, I just wondered if any one out there had a recipe that captured as near as possible the essence of what a Medieval ale would be like.

Kristi,

Great to meet you. Good luck at Siebel. Let me know if female brewers are well-represented in your class. And I'll definitely stop in for some of that Alexandria beer next time I'm in town.

The brewsters are on their way back! I'm the brewster at a little 7 barrel brewpub in Alexandria, VA, been making the beer there for the last 2 years. Just won a scholarship to Siebel Institute for their Concise Course in Brewing Technology... class starts in November. It'll be interesting to see how many other females will be there.

Cheers and beers!

Jen,

It's so great to hear from you. Congratulations on winning the Barley Cup. I figured you'd own that thing once you settled into a rhythm there at Thompsons. I'm glad you're experimenting with different styles. I have friends who come in two or three times a week. They're always telling me about your awesome beers. Put a little of that Unmata aside for me, and I'll swing in for a round when I visit next, or, better yet, I'll have someone bring a growler in and deliver it here to Montana. I bet that beer would keep you warm on a Western Montana winter day. Oh, and if you're interested, we ran a series of beer education classes, called Betty's For Beer, at Big Sky Brewing Co. You can watch the videos here by clicking on the video or the Beer Betty's tabs on the left side of the blog.

Cheers,

Tim! I can't thank you enough for you kind words in this article and it's so great to see your passion for beer still being published. Miss you much out here at the pub...we are doing a ladies night out here on monday to get the girls into drinking some beer and teaching them the history of us gals in the industry. Brewing has been great! I won the Barley cup with a Vanilla stout and just about jumped out of my pants when I heard that i had won :) wish you could have been there....hopefully a visit back to oregon is in the plans soon so you can come and taste my new batches...made a yummy yummy scotch ale which came out at a 8.6%abv my biggest beer!
